People have indeed been noticing that the Manmek looks a bit odd. Back in the N64 era of gaming, jokes like such in kids' media weren't uncommon. Banjo Kazooie and Tooie had more than their fair share, so I believe that the Manmek might've been a way to capitalise on that trend.
